Before You Hit Connect, Add Context
By Cristiano Pierry
Connection requests earn trust when they include context, intention, and a clear reason the relationship could be mutually valuable.

I’m always happy to connect with thoughtful people on LinkedIn.
That said, I try to be intentional about the network I build here. I prioritize connecting with people I know, people who are connected through trusted mutual relationships, and people who take the time to introduce themselves.
A shared alma mater, company, industry, or interest can be a great starting point. But it should not be the entire message.
If you are reaching out to someone you do not know, send a note. Introduce yourself. Share what prompted you to reach out. Explain what you are looking for, what you are hoping to learn, or why you think the connection could be mutually valuable.
Networks are built on trust, relevance, and reciprocity. A connection request without any explanation puts all the burden on the other person to figure out who you are and why the connection makes sense.
Networks are built on trust, relevance, and reciprocity.
A thoughtful note changes that completely.
It signals intention. It creates context. It makes the connection feel less transactional and more human.
LinkedIn is a powerful place to build relationships, but the best relationships still start with a basic principle: introduce yourself.
