Camera Bodies, Lenses, Filters, Support, And Backpacks
Build the kit from the first decision outward: body path, focal length, support, filter discipline, backpack fit, and cold/dust workflow.

Minimum viable kit: one capable camera body, a 100-400mm/100-500mm/150-600mm/200-600mm class lens, a 24-105mm or similar environmental zoom, extra batteries, plenty of cards, lens cloths, warm gloves, water, snacks, and a support plan.
| Role | Recommended direction |
|---|---|
| Sony primary wildlife | A7R VI on 200-600mm or 400-800mm when detail matters; Alpha 1 II on a shorter fast lens for action or second-body speed. |
| Canon primary wildlife | R5 Mark II for resolution plus action; R6 Mark III for speed/value if crop latitude is less important. |
| Flexible flight range | 100-400mm or 100-500mm for close passes and sudden distance changes. |
| Long range | 150-600mm, 200-600mm, 200-800mm, or 400-800mm when fields, decks, or distant subjects demand reach. |
| Support | Handheld for quick pivots; beanbag from vehicle; monopod on crowded decks; gimbal/tripod for long waits with heavy glass. |
