The Fallback Is Part of the Feature

By Cristiano Pierry

When a conversational product cannot answer confidently, its recovery path should preserve the customer's work and offer a useful next step.

The interesting moment in an AI product often comes after it cannot answer.

Suppose a conversational search tool is unsure whether a title is available in the customer's region. A confident recommendation would be a bad recovery. So would an apology that sends the customer back to an empty search box.

I would want the product to keep the request intact, say what it could not verify, and show the eligible results it can support. The customer can keep moving without accepting an invented answer or starting over.

That path deserves design and evaluation time. People encounter the product's limits as part of the product. A graceful fallback preserves both the customer's work and the truth about what the system knows.
