A Deferral Needs a Door Back
By Cristiano Pierry
Deferring a product choice works when the team names the evidence that will reopen it and who will decide.

“Let's revisit this later” can mean two very different things.
Sometimes we know exactly what is missing. Perhaps a search concept needs a reliability check on live catalog data before it reaches customers. We can name that check, give it an owner, and set the next decision point. Waiting protects the quality of the choice.
Other times “later” is where an uncomfortable choice goes to disappear. The calendar fills up, the assumptions stay untouched, and everyone behaves as if the idea is still under consideration.
A useful deferral leaves a door back into the decision. What would we need to see to open it? If no one can answer, I would rather say we are declining the work for now.
