When Should I Ask My Dot?
By Cristiano Pierry
A connected Mac and a missing tool leave me asking when to use my dot, ChatGPT Work, or Codex.

I’m trying to understand when to use my OpenAI dot instead of ChatGPT Work or Codex.
I asked my dot to complete a task in a native app on my Mac. It said the computer was connected and started a task there. Then it told me that task was missing the tool needed to operate the app. The same kind of request works for me in Work and Codex.
I’m now asking the AI which AI I should have asked.
OpenAI’s documentation says a dot can create local Work or Codex tasks. That makes me curious about what happens during the handoff. Why would the task my dot starts be missing a tool I can use when I start the work directly?
Maybe there’s a setting I’ve missed or a rollout limitation I haven’t understood. I’d like to know what to expect before I choose where to start.
For those using all three: when do you ask your dot, and when do you go straight to Work or Codex? What should “computer connected” actually let me expect it to do?
